1937 Buffalo Nickel Value

The 1937 buffalo nickel value reaches as much as seventy thousand dollars. Why? It has to do with the buffalo on the reverse side. I’ll share in a minute. Before that, I’d like to talk about the mintage for a minute. Then I’ll share the difference with this buffalo nickel from most. Then we’ll get to the reason you’re here. The value of the coin of course! So let’s get to it, starting with mintage.

Mint Mark

In 1937, the Buffalo Nickel (or sometimes called the Indian Head Nickel) was minted in three places.

  • 1937 was minted in Philadelphia
  • 1937-D was minted in Denver
  • 1937-S  was minted in San Francisco

1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel

Okay, so the cat is out of the bag. Or should I say the leg is out of the buffalo. Feel free to click on the image to get a larger view.

The die was polished off the front right leg, so when the coin was struck, we end up with a three legged buffalo nickel. The 1937 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel was in Denver only and many went into circulation before it was caught.

When looking at the coin, you’ll notice that the hoof and stump are both there, but the leg itself is missing. This is a rare coin, making it a great coin to have for a collection.

Just be careful of counterfeits. Unfortunately, some people attempted to duplicate this coin to make some extra money, so be sure to look closely and make sure that the leg wasn’t removed.
