1969 Star Trek Trading Cards #20 Heart of Metal

Released only in the U.K., the 1969 Star Trek trading cards were released by A&BC as the first ever, Star Trek trading card set in full color. The entire set is based on the episode, What Are Little Girls Made Of? Personally, I find this to be a beautiful set, but it’s really hard to find in a high quality condition. These cards are actually quite rare, unlike the 1976 Star Trek set, which is very popular among collectors.

The Cards

A complete set of 1969 Star Trek trading cards consists of 55 cards. The cards are 2 3/16″ x 3 3/16″ in size. You would find 48 packs to a box.

Each card featured an image from the Star Trek episode, What Are Little Girls Made Of?, with a beautiful light-blue border. On the lower-right hand corner, you would  find a white cut-out rocket with the title of the card in it.

The back of each card had the A&BC logo and the USS Enterprise on the top left corner. To the right of this, it said “Star Trek”. The middle had a description of the card with the number to the right. At the bottom, you would find the title of the card.

There are some funny errors on some of the cards. For example, on the first card, the description reads Roger Kirk, rather than James Kirk. The second card stars out by saying “Mr. Spock, Second in Command, is a cross between an Earthman and a Martian”. Um, correct me if I’m wrong, but Spock was definitely not from Mars. Although at times, I’m sure his father, Sarek, wished he was.

Value

Remember, that this is a pretty rare set. However, the interest is up and down on these, which creates a pretty volatile price market. Typically, you can find average conditioned cards for between $5 and $10 each. A set will typically sell for around $300 to $400, depending on the condition. However, these cards are tough to find in high grades. If you have professionally graded specimens that are NM-MT or better, you may be spending some money. Expect to pay as much as $40 to $50. If you have a MINT or GEM Mint card, the price is only speculation, where there are so few specimens.
